Unglazed terracotta pots are porous and require special care to ensure they last a long time. Here are some tips on how to take care of them:
Before Using Terracotta pots as Planters:
-
Soak in Water: Before using, soak the pot in water for at least 24 hours. This helps the terracotta absorb water and prevents it from pulling moisture from the soil or plants too quickly.
-
Seasoning the Pot (Optional): Rub the inside of the pot with a cloth dipped in oil (olive or coconut oil) and let it sit overnight. This helps to seal the pores slightly and maintain moisture in the soil. Rinse the pot thoroughly before use.
General Care:
-
Watering:
- Frequent Watering: Terracotta pots absorb moisture, so plants in these pots may need to be watered more often compared to plastic or glazed pots.
- Water Evenly: To avoid cracking, make sure the pot is watered evenly and kept moist.
-
Cleaning:
- Clean Mineral Deposits: Over time, terracotta pots may develop white, chalky stains from mineral deposits. You can clean these by scrubbing with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stick to mild soap and water or natural cleaners to avoid damaging the porous surface.
-
Protect from Freezing:
- Move Indoors: Terracotta can crack in freezing temperatures, so if the pot is outdoors, consider moving it indoors or to a sheltered area during winter.
- Drainage: Ensure good drainage to prevent water from accumulating inside the pot, which can freeze and cause cracking.
-
Sealing (Optional): For added protection, you can seal the outside of the pot with a breathable terracotta sealer. This reduces water absorption and helps the pot retain its appearance longer.
-
Store Properly: When not in use, store unglazed terracotta pots in a dry place, stacked gently to avoid chipping or breaking.
